Rajeev Singh Thakur set to lead Manipur administration as new Chief Secretary

The Personnel Ministry formally sanctioned the inter-cadre deputation of Rajeev Singh Thakur on August 29, facilitating his transition from the Rajasthan cadre to Manipur. The senior IAS officer will serve in the northeastern state until June 30, 2029, coinciding with his superannuation date.

Thakur's appointment comes as Manipur continues to grapple with serious law-and-order challenges following communal violence that erupted in May 2023. The state has witnessed sustained ethnic tensions between the Meitei-majority plains and Kuki-dominated hill regions, necessitating administrative leadership to navigate the complex governance landscape.

The transfer represents a significant administrative change for the strife-torn state, which has been under considerable central government oversight. The deputation framework allows Thakur to bring his administrative experience to bear on critical governance issues while maintaining his parent cadre linkage with Rajasthan.

As Chief Secretary, Thakur will oversee key portfolios including public order, revenue administration, and inter-community coordination at a pivotal juncture in Manipur's recovery efforts.
