Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict seeks court intervention for passport

A.G. Perarivalan, who was convicted in connection with the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, has moved the Madras High Court seeking intervention in the issuance of a passport. Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy heard the petition and adjourned the matter by one week to allow time for further proceedings. The adjournment came after it was brought to the court's notice that the passport authorities are yet to receive the mandatory police report required to process the application. The police report is a critical document in the passport issuance procedure, particularly in cases involving individuals with criminal convictions. Perarivalan's legal representatives are expected to present the case once the required documentation reaches the passport office. The court's decision to grant additional time suggests it is allowing the authorities a reasonable period to complete the standard procedural requirements before the matter comes up for further hearing.
