Penang's public transport operator has launched its initial 15 electric buses as part of an ambitious modernisation plan. The service rollout signals the state's commitment to greener public transportation ahead of a projected fleet expansion.

Rapid Penang commenced electric bus operations on Thursday with an initial fleet of 15 vehicles deployed across selected routes in the state. The deployment represents the first phase of a broader initiative to transition the operator's fleet toward zero-emission transport solutions.
The transport authority has established an aggressive expansion timeline, targeting a total of 75 electric buses in operation by March 2027. This growth trajectory would significantly increase the proportion of electric vehicles within Rapid Penang's overall bus fleet, contributing to reductions in both emissions and operational costs.
The introduction of electric buses aligns with Malaysia's broader sustainability objectives and reflects growing pressure across Southeast Asia to modernise public transport infrastructure. States across the region have increasingly invested in electric vehicle fleets to address urban air quality concerns and reduce carbon footprints.
Rapid Penang's project demonstrates how established transport operators are adapting to environmental regulations and shifting consumer preferences toward sustainable mobility solutions. The initiative also creates opportunities for charging infrastructure development and employment in the electric vehicle maintenance sector across Penang.
