Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD), a rare genetic disorder that disrupts normal bone and tooth formation, now has its first comprehensive set of clinical management guidelines following a collaborative effort involving multiple international specialists and patient advocacy organizations.
The 37 recommendations, developed by medical experts and patient care advocates, provide healthcare professionals with standardized protocols for early diagnosis and effective treatment of the condition. The guidelines emphasize the critical importance of coordinated care among dentists, orthopedic surgeons, geneticists, and other specialists, along with regular monitoring to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
CCD Smiles, the organization co-founded by American actor Gaten Matarazzo in 2017, played a pivotal role in bringing stakeholders together to develop these standards. Matarazzo, who himself has CCD, has become a prominent advocate for increased awareness and research into the disorder, which affects bone development in the collarbones, skull, and teeth.
The new guidelines are expected to improve diagnosis rates and treatment quality for CCD patients worldwide. By providing evidence-based recommendations, the standards aim to reduce diagnostic delays and ensure patients receive appropriate specialized care tailored to their individual needs.
