Wildlife officials at Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi province have recorded rare footage showing melanistic and normally spotted leopards together, marking a significant observation for Thailand's conservation efforts. The dual sighting, captured through motion-activated camera traps deployed across the protected area, offers researchers a glimpse into the behavior and distribution of the critically endangered Indochinese leopard population.

The melanistic variant, characterized by its dark coloration caused by a genetic condition, is considerably less common than its spotted counterpart. The simultaneous documentation of both forms in Kaeng Krachan demonstrates the genetic diversity present within the park's leopard population and suggests the area continues to serve as a vital refuge for the species.

Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand's largest terrestrial protected area, has become increasingly important for large carnivore conservation in Southeast Asia. The park's mountainous terrain and extensive forest cover provide suitable habitat for several apex predator species, though leopard populations across the region remain threatened by habitat loss and poaching.

This documentation effort underscores the role of camera trap technology in advancing understanding of elusive wildlife populations. Conservation authorities indicate the findings will inform ongoing management strategies for protecting the park's biodiversity and maintaining viable leopard populations for future generations.
