Rare leucistic Philippine duck documented in Leyte nature reserve

MANILA — Protected area rangers made an uncommon discovery while conducting routine patrols at Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park (MVNP) in Burauen, Leyte: a Philippine duck displaying distinctive pale plumage caused by leucism, a rare genetic pigmentation condition.

The leucistic Philippine duck (Anas luzonica) was observed in the waters of Lake Malagsum within the park boundaries. Unlike their normally darker-plumaged counterparts, the bird's feathers exhibited an unusually light coloration, making it readily distinguishable from other ducks in the area.

Leucinism is a recessive genetic trait that results in reduced pigmentation across an animal's skin, feathers, or fur while typically preserving normal eye coloration. The condition differs from albinism, which affects all pigments and often results in pink or red eyes.

The sighting marks a notable occurrence for the protected area, which is managed to preserve the region's unique biodiversity. Philippine ducks are endemic to the archipelago and are classified as vulnerable due to habitat loss and hunting pressures. The documentation of the leucistic individual adds to scientific understanding of the species' genetic variation.
