Rare marine mammals spotted off Sultan Kudarat coast in wildlife survey

KORONADAL CITY — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Regional Office for Soccsksargen confirmed the presence of significant marine fauna off Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat this week, during an ongoing wildlife monitoring program.

The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Kalamansig documented six dugongs, also known as sea cows, and five green sea turtles engaged in foraging activities in the coastal waters. Both species are protected under Philippine environmental laws and are considered important indicators of marine ecosystem health.

The observation was made as part of the DENR-12's regular marine biodiversity assessment initiatives in the region. Dugongs, which are large herbivorous marine mammals, and green sea turtles are known to inhabit Philippine waters but sightings in concentrated groups remain notable for researchers tracking population trends.

The documentation of these marine species in Kalamansig waters adds to scientific understanding of the area's ecological value and supports ongoing conservation efforts by local and national environmental authorities.
