Rare Mindoro bird spotted after nearly 20 years, boosting conservation efforts

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — Conservationists have recorded fresh evidence of the Mindoro bleeding-heart, one of the rarest bird species found on the island, in camera trap footage captured last August at a highland forest location.

The sighting marks the first documented record of the critically endangered Gallicolumba platenae in nearly two decades, according to researchers monitoring wildlife in Mindoro's protected forest areas. The bird, distinguished by a distinctive crimson patch on its breast, has become increasingly elusive as its natural habitat continues to shrink.
