SUBIC, Zambales — Environmental authorities in Central Luzon received a Philippine serpent eagle after the bird was found in Barangay Matain here, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources reported Monday.

The rescued raptor, scientifically identified as Spilornis holospilus, was turned over by the village government of Matain to the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in the area. The species is endemic to the Philippines and protected under national wildlife conservation laws.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources did not provide additional details regarding the bird's condition or the circumstances of its rescue. CENRO personnel are expected to conduct an assessment to determine whether the eagle can be returned to the wild or requires ongoing care.

The Philippine serpent eagle is a medium-sized raptor known for its distinctive appearance and specialized diet. Encounters with the species are relatively uncommon, making rescues significant for local conservation efforts in the region.
