Rayalaseema seeks GI status for 50 agricultural products
A consortium of stakeholders in the Rayalaseema region is mobilizing efforts to secure Geographical Indication tags for 50 agricultural commodities, aiming to boost market value and protect traditional farming practices.

Officials and industry representatives from the Rayalaseema region, spanning parts of Andhra Pradesh, are advancing a proposal to obtain Geographical Indication (GI) certification for 50 agricultural products indigenous to the area. The initiative, being championed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade Services (MITS), seeks to leverage GI protections to enhance the marketability and premium pricing of regionally distinctive farm commodities.
Geographical Indication status provides legal protection for products originating from a specific region, ensuring that only goods produced according to established methods in that territory can carry the designation. For agricultural products, GI certification can significantly increase consumer demand and allow producers to command higher prices in domestic and international markets.
The Rayalaseema region, historically known for diverse agricultural output, produces numerous crops and processed foods with distinct characteristics shaped by local soil, climate, and traditional cultivation methods. By securing GI tags, farmers and producers in the region aim to differentiate their goods from competitors and establish stronger brand identities in the marketplace.
The proposal encompasses products spanning multiple categories, though officials have yet to release the complete list of commodities under consideration. Stakeholders view the GI certification drive as a strategic tool for rural economic development and agricultural sustainability in the region, potentially attracting investment and creating additional income streams for farming communities.
