Rayalseema struggles with child protection amid rising POCSO case backlog

Child safety remains a critical concern across Rayalseema as courts grapple with an expanding caseload of sexual abuse cases. The region's exclusive POCSO courts are managing 5,408 pending cases, reflecting both the scale of child protection violations and systemic bottlenecks that delay justice for young victims.

Andhra Pradesh recorded a mixed picture in case registrations during 2025. While the state overall saw a decline in POCSO filings, Chittoor district bucked the trend with rising numbers, whereas Anantapur and Kurnool districts reported decreases. The variation underscores uneven implementation of child protection frameworks across districts.

Several structural impediments continue to frustrate efforts to expedite case resolution. Forensic examination delays, judicial staff vacancies and inadequate resources stretch the capacity of specialized courts intended to handle child abuse cases swiftly. Beyond institutional challenges, deep-rooted social stigma and fear of community ostracism deter many families from reporting abuse, leaving vulnerable children without recourse.

Experts emphasize that strengthening India's child protection system requires a multi-pronged approach extending beyond law enforcement. Prevention strategies, community awareness campaigns, early case reporting mechanisms and robust institutional support remain essential to creating genuinely safe environments for children across the region.
