RBI announces rupee support measures including dollar sales window

The Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday announced several measures aimed at providing support to the Indian rupee amid currency market pressures. The central bank said it would establish a special window through which oil companies can purchase US dollars directly, a move designed to ease dollar demand pressures in the foreign exchange market.

The RBI also indicated it would sell dollars in the spot market as part of its broader intervention strategy to stabilize the currency. These measures come as the rupee has faced depreciation pressure against the US dollar in recent months.

In addition to the dollar sales facility, the central bank tightened regulations governing foreign exchange derivatives. The stricter norms are intended to curb excessive speculation in the forex derivatives market and reduce volatility in currency trading.

The RBI's multi-pronged approach reflects the central bank's commitment to maintaining orderly conditions in the foreign exchange market while supporting the rupee's stability. The special window for oil companies is expected to reduce their need to access dollars through regular market channels, thereby reducing upward pressure on the currency.

Market analysts said the combination of direct dollar sales, the oil company facility, and tighter derivatives regulations should help stabilize the rupee while addressing legitimate hedging needs of Indian businesses and financial institutions.
