RBI appoints Sudhakar Malli as executive director for bank supervision

The Reserve Bank of India has appointed Sudhakar Malli as executive director, tasking him with oversight of the central bank's bank supervision functions. The appointment reflects the RBI's continued focus on strengthening regulatory oversight of the banking sector.

Malli comes to the role with approximately three decades of professional experience, spanning senior positions across the financial services regulatory landscape. His career has encompassed more than 25 years in direct supervision of banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), and cooperative banks, providing him with extensive expertise in regulatory frameworks and supervisory practices.

The appointment is expected to reinforce the RBI's supervisory capabilities at a time when the central bank continues to navigate evolving challenges in India's banking sector, including asset quality concerns, digital financial inclusion, and regulatory compliance. As executive director, Malli will oversee the department responsible for on-site and off-site supervision of scheduled commercial banks and other financial institutions under the RBI's purview.

The RBI regularly rotates senior leadership roles to ensure continuity in its regulatory functions while bringing fresh perspectives to key supervisory areas. Malli's extensive background in banking sector oversight positions him to contribute significantly to the central bank's supervisory agenda.
