The Reserve Bank of India has addressed widespread speculation about potential changes to the Cheque Truncated System (CTS) format, providing clarity on the validity of cheque books currently in circulation.

Amid circulating claims that cheque books would become obsolete in 2026, the RBI has intervened to dispel confusion regarding the future of the Cheque Truncated System. The central bank confirmed that existing CTS cheque books will continue to remain valid and operational beyond the speculated timeline, countering viral assertions about their discontinuation.
The Cheque Truncated System, introduced to streamline cheque clearing processes across Indian banks, has been a standard feature of the country's banking infrastructure for over a decade. Under this system, cheques are scanned and processed electronically, with physical instruments truncated at collection centres rather than being physically transported between banks.
The RBI's clarification seeks to allay concerns among account holders who had become apprehensive about their existing cheque books. Banks and financial institutions have been advised to continue accepting and processing cheques issued from current CTS books in accordance with established protocols.
The central bank's statement underscores the stability of current cheque infrastructure and reaffirms the validity of instruments issued under the present system. Account holders are advised to rely on official RBI communications for any future updates regarding banking procedures and cheque processing standards.
