RBI fines Asset Care & Reconstruction Enterprise ₹27.3 lakh for regulatory breach

The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹27.3 lakh on Asset Care & Reconstruction Enterprise (ACRE) for failing to comply with regulatory directions governing the charging of management fees.

The penalty was levied following an inspection conducted by the RBI, which identified instances of non-compliance with the central bank's directions on how the ARC should structure and levy its management fees. Asset reconstruction companies play a critical role in the financial system by acquiring stressed assets from banks and financial institutions.

The RBI has consistently emphasised adherence to regulatory norms across all entities operating under its purview, including ARCs. Such penalties are part of the central bank's supervisory framework to ensure compliance with prescribed guidelines and maintain the integrity of the financial system.

This action underscores the RBI's commitment to enforcing regulatory standards across the asset reconstruction sector, which has grown significantly in managing India's mounting non-performing assets. The penalty serves as a reminder to all regulated entities of the importance of strict adherence to central bank directives.
