RBI Raises Repo Rate, Making Home and Auto Loans Costlier
The Reserve Bank of India has announced an increase in the repo rate, signaling higher borrowing costs across the economy. Consumers can expect increased equated monthly installments on mortgages, vehicle loans, and other credit products.

The Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy committee has raised the repo rate, the benchmark lending rate at which banks borrow from the central bank. The decision, announced Wednesday, will have immediate implications for millions of Indian households and businesses relying on credit.
The rate increase is expected to filter through to consumer lending within weeks, as commercial banks typically adjust their prime lending rates in response to RBI policy moves. Home loans, auto loans, personal loans, and other floating-rate credit products will become more expensive, resulting in higher monthly repayment obligations for existing borrowers with variable-rate loans and steeper interest costs for new borrowers.
The RBI's action reflects the central bank's efforts to manage inflation pressures in the economy. By raising the cost of borrowing, the central bank aims to cool demand and contain price increases, though the move comes with trade-offs for credit-dependent sectors including real estate and automobile manufacturing.
Consumers holding variable-rate loans should prepare for increased EMI burdens, while potential borrowers may face stiffer qualification criteria and higher effective loan costs. Banks will announce their adjusted lending rates following the RBI's decision.
