Fresh monetary tightening by the US Federal Reserve has intensified speculation about the Reserve Bank of India's policy stance heading into its October decision, with rate hike bets now solidifying across trading floors. The divergence in monetary policy between Washington and Mumbai has begun filtering through India's financial system in multiple ways.
The rupee has weakened to levels hovering near 96 per dollar, reflecting capital outflows driven by rising US returns. Concurrently, American 10-year Treasury yields have surged past the 5 percent mark, making dollar-denominated assets more attractive to global investors and placing additional depreciation pressure on the Indian currency.
Commodity markets are signalling their own concerns. Brent crude oil has remained elevated above $100 per barrel, threatening to feed into domestic inflation pressures at a time when the RBI is already grappling with sticky price growth. This combination of a weakening rupee, higher import costs for energy, and elevated global yields creates a complex backdrop for India's monetary policymakers.
The interplay of these factors has made the central bank's October policy decision less predictable than previously assumed. While the RBI has paused rate increases in recent months, renewed external pressures may force a reassessment of the inflation-growth trade-off in coming weeks.
