RBI Rate Hike Signals Further Tightening Ahead, Experts Warn

The Reserve Bank of India raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 per cent on Wednesday, marking its first increase since 2018 as inflation pressures and currency weakness force a policy recalibration. The move came alongside a formal shift in the RBI's monetary policy stance from 'neutral' to 'calibrated tightening', signalling the central bank's readiness to continue hiking rates.

Market experts anticipate the RBI will press ahead with further increases at its next bi-monthly policy review scheduled for December 4. Several analysts expect the central bank to raise rates by up to 50 basis points at that meeting, underscoring expectations of sustained tightening in the months ahead.

The policy shift is already reverberating through India's financial sector. Bajaj Finance announced rate increases on fixed deposits ranging from 15 to 40 basis points across tenures of 12 to 60 months, effective October 7. The hikes apply to both new deposits and renewals, with the steepest increases—35 basis points—reserved for longer-tenure deposits of 31 to 60 months.

The RBI's pivot reflects growing concern over rising inflation and the Indian rupee's weakness against the US dollar. The central bank's signalling of additional rate increases suggests policymakers view further monetary tightening as necessary to anchor inflation expectations and support currency stability in the near term.
