RBI Rules on Unclaimed Fixed Deposits After Maturity Explained
Indian depositors who fail to withdraw matured fixed deposits face potential transfer of funds to the RBI's Deposit Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund after a decade of non-claiming. Understanding bank policies on post-maturity FD handling is essential for account holders.

Fixed deposit holders in India must be aware of regulatory provisions governing their accounts after the maturity period expires, particularly if they neglect to withdraw their funds promptly. According to Reserve Bank of India guidelines, banks have specific protocols for handling matured deposits that remain unclaimed by account holders.
Following maturity, banks may either transfer the accumulated amount to the depositor's savings or current account, or automatically renew the fixed deposit based on the terms agreed upon during the initial placement. The specific course of action depends on individual bank policies and the instructions provided by the account holder at the time of FD creation.
However, depositors face significant consequences if they fail to claim their matured fixed deposits within ten years. Under RBI regulations, funds that remain unclaimed beyond this period are transferred to the Deposit Education and Awareness Fund, removing them from the bank's immediate custody. This transfer represents a critical threshold for account holders seeking to recover their investments.
Depositors can still recover funds transferred to the DEA Fund, but the process becomes considerably more complex and time-consuming compared to claiming matured deposits directly from their banks. Financial experts recommend that account holders maintain clear records of their fixed deposit maturity dates and ensure timely withdrawal or renewal to avoid complications and potential loss of accessibility to their funds.
