RBI's 40 basis point UPI fee to lift fintech sector earnings
The Reserve Bank of India's decision to impose a higher-than-expected 40 basis point charge on certain UPI transactions is expected to provide a significant earnings boost to fintech companies. The framework will affect a limited portion of overall merchant transaction volumes, minimising broader market disruption.

The RBI's new UPI fee structure, set at 40 basis points, is anticipated to enhance profitability for fintech firms operating in India's digital payments ecosystem. Industry analysts had projected a lower fee ceiling, making the final framework more favourable than expected for service providers dependent on transaction-based revenue models.
The regulatory framework specifically excludes UPI-linked credit card payments from the fee requirement, a carve-out that significantly narrows the fee's scope. According to initial assessments, the charges will apply to only approximately 4 per cent of total merchant transaction volumes processed through the UPI network.
Fintech companies have welcomed the decision, viewing it as validation of the need for sustainable monetisation models within the digital payments space. The limited application scope suggests the RBI has sought to balance revenue generation for service providers with affordability considerations for merchants and consumers.
With UPI transaction volumes continuing to expand rapidly across India, even a 4 per cent fee-bearing segment is expected to generate meaningful additional revenue for participating fintech entities. The framework's implementation is likely to prompt further evolution in India's competitive digital payments landscape as companies adapt their service offerings accordingly.
