RBI's Account Aggregator Framework: Standardised fees reshape data access
From November 1, financial institutions will adopt a uniform fee structure to access customer financial data through India's Account Aggregator network. The framework represents a significant shift in how banks and fintech companies obtain customer information.

The Account Aggregator (AA) framework, regulated by the Reserve Bank of India, enables customers to securely share their financial information across institutions without repeatedly providing credentials or documents. Operating as a consent-based system, the AA acts as an intermediary between financial institutions and customers, allowing seamless data flow while maintaining privacy and security standards.
Under the new pricing mechanism effective November 1, financial institutions will pay a standardised fee to access customer data through the AA network. This represents a shift from previous arrangements and aims to create a transparent, uniform cost structure across the banking and financial services ecosystem. The standardised approach is intended to promote wider adoption of the framework while ensuring service providers are fairly compensated.
For customers, the AA framework simplifies financial management by eliminating the need to visit multiple institutions or repeatedly authenticate their identity. Whether applying for loans, investment products, or insurance, individuals can authorize data sharing with a single consent, reducing paperwork and processing time. Financial institutions benefit from faster, more reliable access to verified customer data, potentially streamlining credit assessment and product recommendations.
The framework's implementation reflects broader regulatory efforts to foster a more interconnected financial system while protecting consumer interests. By standardising fees and formalising data-sharing protocols, regulators aim to accelerate financial inclusion and enable faster, more efficient service delivery across India's banking sector.
