RBI's bulk FD rules take effect: uniform rates across branches from October
The Reserve Bank of India's new regulations on bulk fixed deposits will come into force on October 1, mandating banks to offer identical interest rates for similar deposits accepted on the same day across all branches and customer categories.

Banks operating in India will be required to comply with fresh guidelines governing bulk fixed deposits starting October 1, marking a significant shift in how these high-value deposits are managed across the banking sector. The Reserve Bank of India has stipulated that financial institutions must offer uniform rates for bulk deposits of similar tenure and amount accepted on any given day, regardless of which branch processes the deposit or the customer's profile.
Under the new regulatory framework, banks cannot offer differential rates to different customers for bulk deposits of equivalent value and maturity accepted simultaneously. This standardization is designed to ensure transparency and prevent discriminatory pricing practices that may have previously favored certain depositors or been contingent on branch-level discretion.
The move is expected to bring greater consistency to the bulk deposit market and provide depositors with clearer information about prevailing rates. Bulk fixed deposits, typically defined as deposits exceeding a specified threshold amount, represent a significant funding source for banks and have historically been subject to negotiated rates based on various factors.
Financial institutions are advised to align their deposit rate policies and internal systems to ensure seamless compliance with the October 1 implementation date. The RBI's directive applies uniformly across all scheduled commercial banks operating in the country.
