RBI Sets Sovereign Gold Bond Redemption Price at Rs 14,614

The RBI announced the redemption price for the October 2020 tranche of Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs), providing substantial returns to investors who subscribed to the scheme during that period. The fixed price of Rs 14,614 per unit reflects the significant appreciation in gold prices over the investment tenure.

Investors who purchased units in the October 2020 issuance will realize a 192 percent gain on their capital when the bonds mature on October 19. This return excludes the interest component that bondholders have received during the holding period, which typically offers an annual interest rate of 2.5 percent on the initial investment amount.

Sovereign Gold Bonds are government securities denominated in grams of gold, offering investors an alternative to physical gold ownership while providing the safety of government backing. The bonds are issued periodically in tranches, with each tranche having a fixed maturity period of eight years, though investors have the option to exit after five years.

The substantial returns on the October 2020 tranche reflect the global surge in gold prices, driven by various economic and geopolitical factors over the past three years. Gold has traditionally served as a hedge against inflation and currency depreciation, making it an attractive investment avenue for Indian households.

The RBI continues to offer SGBs as a financial instrument to encourage investment in gold through banking channels rather than physical accumulation, thereby promoting digital financial participation and reducing demand for imported bullion.
