RBI signals readiness to raise rates as inflation risks mount

The six-member Monetary Policy Committee, headed by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, maintained the benchmark repo rate at its recent meeting, according to minutes released Wednesday. However, the tone of the discussion suggests policymakers are preparing for interest rate increases if inflation accelerates in coming months.

The committee opted to hold steady while awaiting greater clarity on inflation dynamics, particularly regarding potential spillover effects from elevated energy costs stemming from geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Members cited concerns that supply chain disruptions and heightened uncertainty could feed into broader price pressures across the economy.

Despite headwinds including the West Asian conflict, erratic monsoon patterns, and supply-side vulnerabilities, India's economy outperformed expectations in the first quarter of 2026-27, the Governor noted in the minutes. This stronger-than-anticipated growth provided some comfort to policymakers as they assess the inflation-growth trade-off.

The committee signalled it would consider a monetary tightening response should inflation risks manifest in generalized price increases, a de-anchoring of inflation expectations, or persistent elevation in price growth. The cautious stance reflects the MPC's intent to move preemptively if incoming data confirms inflation is broadening beyond energy-driven pressures.

The next rate decision is expected to hinge on forthcoming inflation data and clearer signals about the trajectory of energy prices and their transmission to the broader economy.
