RBI soaks up ₹1.41 trillion surplus liquidity via reverse repo auctions

The Reserve Bank of India conducted variable rate reverse repo (VRRR) auctions on Monday to withdraw ₹1.41 trillion in surplus liquidity from the financial system. The central bank accepted bids across seven-day and overnight tenors at a weighted average rate of 5.24 per cent, reflecting prevailing money market conditions.

The liquidity absorption underscores the RBI's ongoing efforts to manage excess funds circulating in the banking system and maintain stability in money markets. VRRR auctions provide the central bank with a flexible tool to fine-tune liquidity levels without signalling any shift in broader monetary policy stance.

Following Monday's operations, the RBI announced a fresh two-day VRRR auction scheduled for Tuesday, with a notified amount of ₹1.75 trillion. The successive auctions indicate sustained pressure from surplus funds in the system, reflecting seasonal factors and government spending patterns.

These liquidity management operations come as the RBI continues balancing the need to support credit growth while preventing excessive money supply that could complicate inflation management. Market participants will monitor upcoming auction outcomes for signals on the central bank's assessment of liquidity conditions ahead.
