RBI tightens fixed deposit pricing rules from October
India's banking regulator has mandated new disclosure requirements for large fixed deposits, limiting banks' pricing flexibility from October 1. The move aims to enhance transparency and standardise deposit rate practices across the sector.

Banks operating in India will face stricter regulations governing how they price fixed deposits above a certain threshold, with the Reserve Bank of India requiring advance disclosure of large-deposit rates starting October 1.
Under the new framework, financial institutions must publicly announce their fixed deposit rates for bulk deposits before customers approach them, significantly curtailing the discretion banks currently exercise in offering differentiated rates based on liquidity conditions.
The directive represents a shift toward greater transparency in the deposit market. Previously, banks enjoyed considerable flexibility in pricing large deposits, often negotiating rates individually with high-value depositors. This practice, while allowing banks to manage liquidity needs, created inconsistencies in the rates offered to similar customers.
The RBI's intervention seeks to establish a more standardised approach to deposit pricing while protecting consumer interests. By mandating pre-announced rates, regulators aim to reduce information asymmetry and prevent arbitrary pricing practices that could disadvantage certain depositors.
Banks will need to adjust their operational procedures and rate-setting mechanisms to comply with the new requirements, marking a notable shift in how the deposit mobilisation process functions across Indian banking institutions.
