The Reserve Bank of India announced plans to inject liquidity into the financial system through a Rs 7 lakh crore variable rate reverse repo auction scheduled for September 7. The operation will have a 30-day maturity period.
Reverse repos are a key monetary policy tool through which the RBI lends funds to commercial banks against government securities as collateral. The variable rate structure allows participating institutions to quote their own rates, with the RBI accepting bids up to the notified amount.
In a bid to enhance operational flexibility, the central bank has incorporated an early exit provision into the auction framework. Participants will be permitted to undertake partial or complete reversal of their lent amounts before the scheduled maturity, subject to RBI guidelines.
The move comes as the RBI continues to manage liquidity conditions in the banking system through regular open market operations. Variable rate reverse repos have become an important instrument in the central bank's toolkit for fine-tuning short-term money market rates and ensuring adequate credit flow to the economy.
