RBL Bank is considering a strategic move into broking and mutual fund businesses as part of efforts to deepen its presence in India's capital markets, said R Subramaniakumar, the bank's managing director and chief executive, on Wednesday.
No final decisions have been taken on the proposal, Subramaniakumar clarified while speaking to media. The bank is currently evaluating which capital markets activities can be conducted in-house, which could be handled at the group level—referring to its parent Emirates NBD—and which would require establishing separate specialized entities.
"All the plans are under evaluation," Subramaniakumar said, noting that it is premature to discuss specifics or announce any timeline for implementation. Potential ventures including asset management operations, mutual fund distribution, retail broking services, and institutional broking would necessarily operate as independent units outside the bank's core operations to comply with regulatory requirements.
The bank, which operates with a strong capital position, is examining multiple strategic options but has not yet determined whether organic expansion or acquisitions of existing entities would form part of its growth strategy. The evaluation process remains in early stages, with various scenarios currently under consideration before any formal announcements are made.
