Real Madrid has initiated action to recoup payments from the six Premier League clubs that withdrew from the European Super League project, according to reports. The Spanish club is pursuing the matter as a result of the English sides' departure from the proposed breakaway competition.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur were among the founding members who committed to the Super League concept but subsequently pulled out amid widespread opposition from fans, government officials and football authorities. Their withdrawal significantly undermined the viability of the project, which had been designed as a closed-shop competition featuring Europe's elite clubs.
The dispute highlights the financial and contractual complexities that emerged from the Super League proposal. Real Madrid and other clubs that remained committed to the project have alleged that the departing English sides had entered into binding agreements that included financial obligations.
The matter remains unresolved, with the six Premier League clubs maintaining their positions regarding the agreements. The Super League concept has effectively stalled since the mass withdrawals, though some of its architects have continued to explore alternative formats for a reformed European club competition.
