Recruiters warn against unfair workplace burdens on childless workers

As more employers implement generous parental leave schemes and childcare support, industry recruiters are raising concerns that such policies risk creating inequitable working conditions for employees without dependents.

The warning comes amid growing adoption of family-friendly workplace measures across the region. While these initiatives aim to support working parents, recruiters stress that implementation must be carefully managed to prevent childless workers from shouldering disproportionate responsibilities.

"The risk is that well-intentioned policies inadvertently create a two-tier system where non-parents compensate for absences and reduced availability among colleagues with children," recruiters have cautioned. The concern extends to potential career advancement disparities, where those taking extended parental leave or reduced schedules might face implicit disadvantages.

Employers are being urged to adopt holistic workforce planning that distributes workload equitably regardless of family status. This includes investing in temporary cover arrangements, cross-training staff, and ensuring performance evaluations do not penalise those on flexible arrangements or reward others for absorbing extra work.

The guidance reflects broader regional discussions on building inclusive workplace cultures that accommodate diverse life circumstances without creating resentment or unfair labour practices among the workforce.
