Authorities at St Annes beach on England's Fylde Coast have found an environmentally sustainable use for millions of unwanted Christmas trees that would otherwise end up in landfills. Rather than disposal, the trees are being strategically placed along the shoreline where they serve a critical function in coastal management.

The trees work by trapping wind-blown sand, allowing it to accumulate and build up the natural dunes that line the beach. Since the initiative began more than a decade ago, the expanded dune system has progressively strengthened, creating increasingly effective barriers against the sea.

Beyond flood protection for nearby residential and commercial properties, the reinforced dunes have generated unexpected ecological benefits. The wider sand formations provide new habitats for specialised plant species and wildlife that depend on coastal dune ecosystems, effectively restoring natural biodiversity to the area.

The St Annes project exemplifies how waste reduction and natural coastal defence strategies can work in tandem. As climate change increases the frequency of severe weather events and coastal erosion threatens communities worldwide, such nature-based solutions offer promising alternatives to expensive infrastructure-heavy approaches to coastal protection.
