Red alert issued for Bay of Bengal as Cyclone Arnab intensifies

The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre issued the red alert at 9:30 a.m. on 26 October 2026, warning of dangerous maritime conditions across deep and shallow sea areas of the Bay of Bengal. The alert remains in effect for the following 12-hour period and applies specifically to multi-day fishing vessels and other maritime traffic in the region.

A deep depression that had been tracked over the east-central and adjoining southeast portions of the Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclonic storm Arnab, according to the meteorological authority. The system has begun moving westwards, bringing with it the potential for severe weather conditions across affected sea areas.

Marinersoperating in the Bay of Bengal have been advised to exercise extreme caution and consider returning to port or altering their courses to avoid the storm's path. The combination of strong winds and rough seas poses significant hazards to vessels, particularly smaller craft and fishing boats that typically operate in these waters.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the storm's development and track its movement. Updates to the warning status are expected as further information becomes available on Arnab's trajectory and intensity.
