Red Cross aids vulnerable seniors with air purifiers, utility support

The Singapore Red Cross has launched a targeted support initiative to help senior citizens cope with worsening air quality and heat stress. Air purifiers have been distributed to vulnerable elderly residents, particularly those aged 70 and above living independently, to reduce exposure to indoor air pollutants during periods of regional haze.
Beyond the appliances, beneficiaries received $100 cash assistance to help manage rising electricity bills, a critical concern as seniors increasingly rely on air conditioning and air purification systems during hot and hazy conditions. The initiative recognises the heightened health risks faced by elderly populations during episodes of poor air quality and extreme heat.
The move reflects growing concerns about air quality in Singapore and the broader Southeast Asian region, where seasonal haze events have become more frequent and intense. Senior citizens, particularly those with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, face elevated health risks during such periods.
