Red Cross pledges additional $2m for Nepal flood relief efforts

The Singapore Red Cross announced the additional commitment as rescue and recovery efforts continue in Nepal, where the August 26 floods have claimed more than 1,450 lives. The disaster has also left over 5,700 people unaccounted for, with search operations ongoing across affected regions.

The combined pledge brings the organization's total contribution to Nepal's relief efforts to significant levels, as the nation grapples with one of its worst natural disasters in recent years. The funds will support emergency response activities, including search and rescue operations, medical care, shelter provision, and rehabilitation assistance for displaced communities.

The public campaign launched by the Singapore Red Cross has demonstrated strong community support, with donations exceeding $6.2 million to date. The funds are being channeled through established relief networks to ensure efficient delivery of aid to the most affected areas.

Nepal's government has appealed for international assistance as the scale of the disaster becomes clearer. Beyond immediate emergency response, authorities are preparing for longer-term reconstruction efforts in districts that suffered extensive infrastructure damage from the flooding.
