The straits serve as a vital conduit for global trade, with hundreds of ships transiting daily between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. Mr Siow emphasised that the success of these joint initiatives demonstrates what can be achieved when nations prioritise the common good over narrow interests. The transport minister noted that ongoing coordination efforts, including regular patrols, information-sharing arrangements and port state control measures, have been instrumental in countering piracy, preventing accidents and protecting the marine environment. He underscored that the stability of these sea lanes benefits not only the region but the global economy as a whole, making continued multilateral cooperation essential for maintaining prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
