Regional transport cooperation must keep pace with infrastructure integration

As transport infrastructure across South and Southeast Asia grows more integrated, government cooperation frameworks must evolve at a similar pace to realise the full benefits of regional connectivity, Singapore's Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow said on Wednesday.
Speaking at two separate events in the Chinese capital, Siow highlighted the growing interdependencies among transport systems across the region. Modern logistics networks, cross-border rail and road corridors, and shared maritime routes increasingly require coordinated policy responses and unified standards, he noted.
The minister's comments underscore the challenges facing policymakers as transport networks expand beyond traditional national boundaries. Issues ranging from harmonising safety regulations to managing congestion across borders demand sustained dialogue between regional governments.
