Regulator cracks down on online explosive sales, fines platforms

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has launched a significant enforcement drive against online marketplaces permitting the sale of hazardous explosive substances, imposing penalties and regulatory notices on leading platforms in the sector.

Dial4Trade and ExportersIndia have each been fined Rs 10 lakh for violations related to the unlicensed online sale of explosives. The action follows the discovery that both platforms were hosting sellers offering such materials without requisite authorization or safety compliance measures.

Major platforms IndiaMART and Justdial have received formal notices from the regulator, signaling further potential enforcement action. As part of the crackdown, the CCPA has delisted 3,940 sellers engaged in the unauthorized sale of explosive materials across multiple e-commerce platforms.

The regulatory action underscores growing concerns about consumer safety and the need for stricter oversight of hazardous goods sold through online channels. Explosive materials are subject to stringent licensing and safety regulations under Indian law, and their unregulated online sale poses significant public safety risks.

The CCPA's intervention reflects heightened scrutiny of e-commerce platforms' compliance responsibilities in policing prohibited and restricted items on their marketplaces. Industry observers expect the action may prompt platforms to strengthen their seller verification and product category monitoring mechanisms.
