Reliance Retail profit plummets 24.3% despite 5.8% revenue growth

Reliance Retail's profitability came under pressure in Q2 despite maintaining steady revenue expansion, with net profit contracting 24.3 percent year-on-year. The company's total revenue reached ₹80,220 crore, marking a 5.8 percent increase from the corresponding quarter last year.

The profit decline was driven primarily by a significant spike in finance costs, which jumped 53.9 percent to ₹905 crore during the quarter. This surge in borrowing expenses appears to have offset gains from the company's revenue growth, pressuring bottom-line performance.

Within the Reliance group's retail operations, the consumer products vertical demonstrated stronger momentum. Reliance Consumer Products' gross revenue surged 1.6 times to reach ₹8,266 crore in Q2, reflecting robust demand for the company's branded offerings across its retail network.

The mixed results underscore the challenges facing India's retail sector, where companies are managing expansion investments and rising debt servicing costs amid competitive pressures. Reliance Retail continues to expand its footprint across modern retail, grocery, and consumer goods categories, but elevated financing expenses remain a drag on consolidated profitability.
