Religious Affairs Ministry Calls for Special Prayers as Serian Battles Haze Crisis

PUTRAJAYA — The Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) has called on mosques and surau nationwide to organise solat hajat, a special prayer for divine intervention, following the haze emergency declared in Serian, Sarawak.

The department also urged religious institutions to coordinate community relief efforts and provide material assistance to residents impacted by the deteriorating air quality. Religious leaders have been tasked with galvanising grassroots support networks to help vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those with respiratory conditions.

The appeal comes as Serian experiences hazardous air quality levels, prompting authorities to activate emergency protocols. The department's initiative reflects efforts to mobilise both spiritual and practical community resources during the environmental crisis.

Sarawak has been grappling with transboundary haze in recent weeks, attributed to land clearing and agricultural burning in neighbouring regions. Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors, use air purifiers, and seek medical attention if experiencing respiratory distress.
