The incident occurred at the high-security facility in Kandy District when the prisoner from Galagedara made what authorities describe as an armed escape attempt. According to Pallekele Police, the remand detainee approached a security guard post and allegedly tried to wrestle a weapon from an officer stationed there.
In response to the alleged threat, prison security personnel discharged their firearm, fatally striking the inmate. A senior prison official confirmed the circumstances surrounding the shooting, though investigations into the exact sequence of events remain ongoing.
The prisoner had been remanded in custody on charges related to narcotics offences. The incident marks a significant security breach at one of Sri Lanka's major correctional facilities and is likely to prompt a review of protocols at the prison's guard posts.
The incident has been referred to relevant authorities for further investigation, including examination of security procedures and the circumstances that led to the alleged escape attempt.
