Remote Zamboanga school builds disaster readiness through homegrown responder training

PAGADIAN CITY — Pisompongan Integrated School in Midsalip town, located 20 kilometers from the nearest major city center, conducted a comprehensive two-day emergency response training program over the weekend to strengthen disaster preparedness in its geographically isolated community.

The initiative reflects growing recognition among educators that schools in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas face heightened risks during disasters, often with limited access to external emergency services. By developing internal capacity, the school aims to ensure faster response times and better protection for its student body and surrounding residents.

The training transformed teachers, students, and local community volunteers into certified first responders, equipping them with practical skills in emergency medical care, evacuation procedures, and disaster management. Participants learned to coordinate response efforts and provide immediate assistance while waiting for professional emergency services to arrive from more distant urban centers.

School officials emphasized that the program represents a sustainable approach to disaster preparedness tailored to the realities of remote communities. The trained responders now serve as a resource pool capable of supporting not only the school but also neighboring families during emergencies.
