Renault targets hybrids and CNG for half of India sales within three years

Renault India CEO Stephane Deblaise has outlined an ambitious vision for alternative powertrains, indicating that hybrid and CNG technologies could potentially represent half of the company's sales portfolio in the coming years. While acknowledging the possibility, Deblaise clarified to PTI that the company has not set this as a formal target, preferring to remain flexible as market conditions evolve.

The comments reflect Renault's commitment to a multifuel powertrain strategy tailored to Indian consumer preferences and market dynamics. The company on Saturday unveiled its first strong hybrid variant of the Duster SUV and has signalled plans to introduce factory-fitted CNG models, positioning itself to capture demand across multiple segments of India's diversifying automotive market.

Renault's approach aligns with broader industry trends in India, where multiple powertrain technologies are coexisting rather than one replacing another in rapid succession. Alongside petrol and diesel engines, the market now encompasses hybrids, CNG vehicles, and electric offerings, with each technology serving different consumer needs and price points.

Industry analysts view hybrid technology as a pragmatic transitional solution as the electric vehicle ecosystem develops in India. By offering hybrid and CNG options alongside conventional powertrains, automakers like Renault are hedging their bets on India's automotive future while responding to immediate consumer demand for fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
