Search and rescue operations continued at the site of a building collapse in Old Delhi's Chawri Bazar area on Friday, more than 24 hours after the structure came down. The incident, which occurred around 9:45 am on Thursday near Gali Sitara close to Chawri Bazar Metro station, has claimed two lives so far, according to officials.
Approximately 10 to 15 labourers were present at the construction site when the three-storey building collapsed. Multiple agencies including Delhi Police, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) launched an extensive rescue operation at the congested location.
Rescue teams have extracted four individuals from the wreckage to date. Two labourers identified as Kishori, 40, and Sanjeet, 45, were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others, Sahdev Chaudhary, 25, and Firoz, 37, were rescued and are receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the collapse. An additional four people were also removed from the debris separately.
The rescue operation has remained active as authorities work to account for all individuals who were at the site at the time of the incident. Investigators are examining the cause of the collapse, with structural failure being suspected.
