Rescue efforts underway to fully reopen Tibet highway to border port

The G216 national highway, which provides critical access to Gyirong Port on the Tibet-Nepal border, suffered significant damage from a mudslide that blocked traffic along the vital trade route. Rescue teams have been mobilised to clear debris and restore full connectivity to the port facility, which serves as an important gateway for cross-border commerce in the region.

As of Monday midday, restoration efforts had extended the reopened section to approximately 1.1 kilometres from the port entrance, indicating steady progress despite challenging terrain and weather conditions typical of the mountainous Xizang region. The remaining stretch requires careful clearance to ensure the highway can safely accommodate regular traffic.

The disruption to the G216 comes at a time when maintaining smooth transport links across Xizang's borders remains economically important for the region. Authorities have not yet specified when full reopening is expected, though the pace of current recovery efforts suggests restoration work is advancing.

Gyirong Port is one of several border crossings in the Tibet autonomous region facilitating trade with neighbouring Nepal and serves as a transit point for goods moving between South Asia and mainland China.
