Rescued gorilla Bili begins new life in Congo after trafficking ordeal

The juvenile gorilla, whose family members were believed killed by traffickers to facilitate her capture, has been transferred to the Tchimpounga Nature Reserve in Congo following her rescue from the illegal wildlife trade. Her arrival marks a significant milestone in efforts to return illegally trafficked animals to their natural habitats across Central Africa.

Bili will undergo an intensive quarantine protocol at the reserve, during which veterinary specialists will conduct comprehensive health assessments to ensure she is physically prepared for social integration. These evaluations are critical to determining her readiness for the next phase of rehabilitation, which will involve gradual introduction to other gorillas in the reserve's care.

The reserve, a leading facility for primate rehabilitation in the region, specializes in preparing orphaned and rescued great apes for eventual return to wild populations. Staff at Tchimpounga will work to develop Bili's social skills and natural behaviors through controlled interactions, laying the groundwork for her potential release into protected forest areas.

Wildlife trafficking remains a significant threat to gorilla populations across Central Africa, with young animals often separated from their families through violent means. Bili's rescue and rehabilitation represent ongoing international efforts to combat the illegal trade and restore endangered primates to their native ecosystems.
