Rescued Tiger Nandu Euthanised at Kerala Zoo Due to Advanced Cancer

The tiger, known as Nandu, was put down at the Thrissur Zoological Park in Kerala following a decision by zoo authorities and veterinary specialists. The animal had been suffering from advanced oral cancer that had progressively deteriorated its quality of life.

Nandu had been rescued from the Wayanad region and subsequently brought to the zoo, where it had been under veterinary care. However, the malignancy in the oral cavity had advanced to a stage where the tiger could no longer consume food, leaving it in a deteriorating condition.

Zoo officials determined that euthanasia was the most humane course of action given the animal's suffering and the terminal nature of its illness. The decision reflects established protocols followed by zoological institutions when animals face severe health conditions that cannot be treated or managed.

The euthanisation marks the end of efforts to provide medical care for the tiger following its initial rescue from the wild. The case highlights the challenges faced by wildlife rehabilitation facilities in managing rescued animals with serious medical conditions.
