Resort guests in Laguna willing to pay for Mt. Makiling conservation

Visitors to resorts across Calamba City and Los Baños in Laguna province have expressed willingness to contribute to environmental protection efforts, according to research conducted by the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).
The study found that resort guests surveyed would support a water user fee of around P75 per visit specifically designated for improved conservation of Mt. Makiling's groundwater. The mountain serves as a critical water source for the region and surrounding communities.
If implemented as a proposed water user fee program, the contribution level could generate approximately P159.52 million, providing substantial funding for groundwater protection and restoration initiatives. The research suggests considerable public support exists for sustainable conservation measures in the area.
The findings underscore growing awareness among leisure travelers regarding environmental conservation needs. Mt. Makiling's groundwater resources face increasing pressure from tourism development and population growth in the region, making sustainable management practices essential for long-term water security.
