Retail inflation accelerates to 4.82% in August as food costs surge

India's retail inflation climbed to 4.82 per cent in August, driven primarily by a sharp acceleration in food prices that reached 5.95 per cent during the month, according to government data released Thursday. The food inflation reading, up from 5.52 per cent in July, marks a notable uptick as agricultural commodity prices faced fresh upward momentum.

The inflation surge was not uniform across regions. Rural areas experienced steeper price pressures, with headline inflation standing at 5.23 per cent, while urban centres recorded a relatively lower rate of 4.31 per cent. The gap underscores the vulnerability of rural populations, which typically spend a larger share of household income on food items.

The uptick in August inflation comes against a backdrop of seasonal factors affecting food production and supply chains. Elevated food inflation remains a key concern for policymakers as it disproportionately impacts lower-income households dependent on agricultural commodities for sustenance.
