Retail inflation hits 23-month peak as food costs surge in September

Retail inflation accelerated significantly in September, rising to 5.54% from 4.83% recorded in the previous month, data showed. The uptick marks the steepest inflationary pressure witnessed in 23 months, signalling renewed strain on household purchasing power across the country.

Food products emerged as the primary driver of the inflationary spike, with food inflation surging to 7.74% in September. Within this category, onion prices registered particularly sharp increases, reflecting supply-side pressures that have consistently weighed on India's inflation trajectory. The sharp rise in vegetable prices cascaded through kitchen budgets, affecting a broad cross-section of consumers.

Beyond food, transport and services segments added to inflationary headwinds in the reporting period. Rising fuel costs and elevated service charges compounded the pressure on retail prices, broadening the inflation impulse across the economy. The combined effect of these factors pushed the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to its highest level since October 2021.

The acceleration in inflation underscores persistent challenges in price stability, particularly in food-dependent economies like India where agricultural commodities carry significant weight in consumer spending. Policymakers will likely scrutinise the trajectory closely as they assess the sustainability of recent price pressures and their implications for monetary policy and household welfare.
