India's retail investor base is expanding at a rapid pace, with demat account additions climbing to 3.3 million as a wave of initial public offerings draws first-time and seasoned market participants into equities.
The momentum comes at an intriguing juncture for market indices. While the benchmark Nifty 50 has declined by 5 per cent, mid-cap and small-cap segments have demonstrated stronger performance, with the Midcap 100 delivering returns of 10 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 advancing nearly 14 per cent.
This divergence in index performance suggests retail investors are diversifying their portfolio exposure beyond large-cap stocks. The current IPO boom appears to be capitalizing on investor enthusiasm for growth opportunities in smaller and mid-sized companies, which have outperformed their large-cap counterparts in the recent period.
The expansion of the demat account base underscores the deepening penetration of equity markets among Indian households, reflecting broader financial inclusion trends. Market participants attribute the surge to improved digital accessibility, growing financial literacy, and the attractiveness of IPO offerings amid market volatility.
